What is Structural Engineering Designer?

What are we usually designing? What materials are we using?

What is our product?

Structural design is a highly specialized area of civil engineering. It can be described as a set of methods or tools that are used to determine safe and economical specifications for a structure and to ensure that a planned structure will be sufficiently strong to carry its intended load. Structural engineers conduct a structural analysis to determine what internal and external forces could affect the structure, then design a structure with the appropriate materials and reinforcements to satisfy the requirements.

There is a strong relationship between the professional disciplines of architecture and structural engineering. While architects are normally tasked with designing the visually appealing features of a project, structural engineers place their focus on strength, durability and safety when designing a building.

New Builds

We have extensive knowledge of creating new buildings and homes.

Construction technology is always improving. Therefore, we work hard to ensure that we have the knowledge to apply the right structural solution for each site needs.

Conversions and extensions to existing structures

This is a special field of the construction industry requiring special skills and knowledge of traditional materials. It always comes with the request of a performant structural survey and additional invasive or non-invasive tests of the exiting materials in use.

Working on exiting structures towards the change of use or to extend the construction is always a challenge for engineers.

Temporary Structures

Temporary structures could be either independent structures meant to be relocated after the usage at the proposed site or structures meant to be designed and build for a dedicated case of loads and site conditions called Temporary Works.

We provide design for both types of works including also Construction Method Statements for contractors.

Traditional Construction

Masonry walls, now typically cavity with timber floors or precast concrete floors. These types of buildings are simple load-bearing structures and suitable up to a limited number of storeys.

Masonry construction and Pre-cast concrete floors result in “heavy” construction. These buildings require “heavy” foundations to resist the loads. The additional excavations costs can result in more expensive foundations.

Timber Frames

ECHRO Project has good knowledge of timber design. We are advising our clients to consider timber frame constructions over traditional block works. The change can save tens of thousands of pounds.

Concrete Frames

Concrete floors, columns and the walls provide the main structure into which the rooms and cladding are fitted. The heavier weight of a concrete building requires the use of piles more often.

On tight city sites, the cost of Party Walls can run into the tens of thousands of pounds. By careful design, the foundation depths were specifically engineered not to be deeper than the adjacent properties, thereby negating the party wall awards.

Steel Frames

Steel frames are great for large clear span openings such as found in retail spaces, offices or opening plan apartments. The floors are typically concrete sat on a steel frame-work of beams and columns.
